MS Hyper-V
To install the App Layering service, you deploy the appliance to a virtual machine in Hyper-V. If the appliance requires a static IP address, you configure one using the appliance configuration utility, as described below. The last section describes next steps.
Requirements
Ensure that the Hyper-V virtual machine from where you are installing the appliance meets the following prerequisites:
- Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2
- Virtual network in Hyper-V
Download the installation package
Note:
As of release 2409, we no longer include a repository disk with the installation package. You must create a new disk and attach it to the appliance VM.
Download the installation package, citrix_app_layering_hyperv_xx
, from the Citrix download site. The zip file includes:
File | Description |
---|---|
hyperv_xx.x.x.x.vhdx |
VHDX file for the appliance VM |
citrix_app_layering_agent_installer.exe |
App Layering agent installer |
citrix_app_layering_os_machine_tools.exe |
OS Machine Tools |
Virtual machine settings for the appliance
Note:
As of release 2409, we no longer support Generation 1 VMs or booting with BIOS.
The virtual machine that you use for the appliance must be configured as follows:
Name | Value |
---|---|
Virtual Machine Name | App Layering Appliance (Enterprise Layer Manager) |
Virtual Machine Generation | Generation 2 |
Secure Boot Template | Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority |
Memory | 8192 MB |
CPUs | 4 |
Disk 1 | unidesk_hyperv-system.vhdx |
Disk 2 | <your-new-repository-disk-name>.vhdx |
Deploy the appliance in Hyper-V
To deploy the appliance:
- Extract the download package,
citrix_app_layering_hyperv_xx.x.x.zip
. One disk (vhdx
) file is included. - Copy the disk to a storage location that the Hyper-V server can access.
- Open the Hyper-V Manager, right-click the Hyper-V server where you want to deploy the appliance, and select New Virtual Machine.
- On the first wizard tab that opens, click Next to begin configuring the virtual machine.
- On the Specify Name and Location tab, set the Name and Location of the new VM. Ideally, use the location where you extracted the disk in step 2.
- On the Specify Generation tab, ensure that Generation 2 VMs is selected. Only Generation 2 VMs are supported.
- On the Assign Memory tab, set the VM to use 8 GB of RAM. Make sure the Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine check box is not selected.
- On the Configure Networking tab, specify the NIC for the network adapter to use to connect to the network.
- On the Connect Virtual Hard Disk tab, attach the system disk (
unidesk_hyperv-system.vhdx
), the disk that you extracted in step 2. - On the Summary tab, verify your choices and click Finish.
- Back in the Hyper-V Manager, select the VM and click Settings from the VM panel.
- Select Hardware > Processor, and set the Number of Virtual Processors to 4.
- Select SCSI Controller > Hard Drive, click Add. (This MUST be done prior to first boot)
- Select the Virtual hard disk radio button, click New.
- This will open up a window for the New Virtual Hard Disk Wizard. Click Next to begin configuring the new disk.
- On the Choose Disk Type tab, select Fixed size and click Next.
- On the Specify Name and Location tab, set the Name and Location of the new disk. Ideally, use the location where you extracted the disk in step 2.
- On the Configure Disk tab, select the Create a new blank virtual hard disk radio button, set the Size to 300 GB and click Next.
- On the Summary tab, verify your choices and click Finish.
- Select Security > Secure Boot, select Enable Secure Boot and set the Secure Boot template to Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority.
- Power on the VM.
- Type the IP address and logon for an administrator with permission to access the App Layering management console.
The first time you log on to the appliance you are required to change the App Layering administrator passwords. For details, see Change administrative passwords.
Configure a Static IP address for the appliance, if necessary
You can change the appliance’s IP address and its DNS servers. When the appliance is first deployed, the DNS settings are retrieved through DHCP. If DHCP is not available, and you are using static IP addresses, once you select Static you are prompted to enter the IP addresses for your DNS servers.
- Log in to the Appliance Configuration utility, using the steps and default password described in Appliance settings.
- At the Action prompt, enter C (for Configure Networking), and press Return.
- At the next prompt, type D for Dynamic (DHCP) or S for Static. If you choose Static, you are prompted for the IP address and Subnet mask, along with the default addresses for the Gateway and DNS addresses.
- When prompted, enter Y to save settings.
- At the Action prompt, enter Q to quit.
- Restart the appliance.
